5 Ways to Build a Great Company Culture

Written by Caitlin Soard | Nov 7, 2016 7:20:36 PM

Company culture is key to keeping employees successful and happy. It doesn't matter how great the products you're selling are, or how much money you're spending on employees, without building a great company culture your business will not retain team members who are thriving. A happy family means a successful business! Follow these tips to build a great company culture that employees and managment alike will thrive in:

Team Building Activities for Work

Curating team building activities is a way to give your team something to look forward to. These can be quarterly, or more frequently! The event doesn't have to be something expensive or elaborate; a team building game or activity a few times per quarter can help give your employees ice breakers and build confidence in one another. Planning bigger outings can be a great way to spark creativity or reward hard work.

Accessible Management

Many corporations, such as Facebook, have adopted a "flat" office plan. These plans mean that instead of having a ladder-style to management, all employees remain on an "equal" playing field. This can range from internal operations to office floor plans - Mark Zuckerburg sits at a desk rather than a giant CEO suite! While this style certainly isn't for all businesses, and the larger the business grows the harder it becomes to maintain, elements of accessability to managers can be adopted into almost any office space. Encouraging open communication is one of the first steps to building a happy office culture.

Culture-First Atmosphere

A lot of companies give the "people-first" culture lip service, but many times when it comes down to actually living it, they fall short. If you're going to promise to put your company culture (and your employees) first, you need to make sure you follow through. If not, it will lead to resentment and loss of a good communication infrastructure.

The Power of Perks

While hopefully your employees are happy with their day-to-day jobs, having small incentives is a great way to help give your team a little boost. These don't have to be actual small gifts (though who doesn't love those?), simply recognizing hard work can be enough to keep employees happy and working toward the company's goal!

We're All in This Together

It is important to stress that everyone is on the same team, from marketing to sales; you're all working toward the same end goal: to make your company the best it can be. By creating a "we're all in this together" company attitude, your company culture will benefit. Encouraging collaboration and merging of ideas is a great way to create this type of atmosphere.
