  • The company needed to fill the position quickly. The hiring manager may not have had time to review all applicants, causing them to miss out on better candidates.
  • The hiring manager didn’t ask the right questions. Maybe they were having an “off” day. Its possible that they didn’t fully know what the job would entail. Regardless, they didn’t ask for the right qualifications, so they didn’t get the right person.
  • The employee was hired by a different manager. Sometimes companies will have other managers interview prospective hires. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always result in the perfect fit and causes more pain than any value provided.
  • The employee they hired, well, simply wasn’t the best employee. It’s not always the hiring manager’s fault. Sometimes people interview very well and when on the job become quite underwhelming in their job duties. 

A bad technical hire can be a significant pain in a company, sometimes costing up to 150% of the new hire’s annual salary, causing project delays, and even creating animosity between departments.
