To be bilingual or multilingual opens up so many opportunities for both your career and for interacting with others from different cultures. Recently there has been interest in a more 'personal' approach to learning a new language - using chatbots. Here are four of the best language-learning bots we've found so far.

Duolingo

Duolingo is probably the most popular language learning platform in the U.S (and possibly around the world). With their virtual language tutors leading the chatbot front, Duolingo has helped thousands of people learn a new language without worry of embarrassment of communicating improperly to a native-speaker.

Originally the bots were only able to communicate between English and Spanish, German, or French. Now they are capable of discussing topics in over 23 different languages (and growing!).

Mondly

Mondly is another well-known language learning platform. They have incorporated chatbots in their online learning as well as via a mobile app where you can choose to either type or speak your responses. Helping you through everyday scenarios such as ordering drinks at a restaurant, the Mondly chatbots can get you to a better understanding the basics of a new language with ease.

Andy

Is English your second language? Andy the Chatbot is your new English teacher here to help you practice. Andy is capable of giving lessons in grammar, expanding your vocabulary with a built-in dictionary, and even providing a simple interface for casual discussion. You can even have Andy play language games with you.

While Andy isn't the most advanced chatbot on the market, it definitely is a start for those who are only starting to learn English.

Lanny from Eggbun Education

A little more obscure than the others, Eggbun Education is for those who are looking to learn Korean, Japanese, or Chinese with a friendly character, Lanny, as your instructor. "An automated language tutor in your pocket," Eggbun's website boasts. Their series of chatbot apps (Eggbun: Easy to Learn ____) have been downloaded over a million times. Unlike other chatbots that are simply to help you speak a new language, Lanny will also teach you about the history and culture of the country the language originates from.
