4 Biggest Barriers to Being an Early Adopter into the Cloud

Human beings tend to accumulate a lot of stuff. Even if you aren’t intending to, things like books and DVDs can easily pile up in your personal space. In a business space, this translates into physical papers lying everywhere—easily lost—as well as digital files taking up tons of space on computers. What’s the solution to this? The cloud! Businesses who have become early adopters into the cloud have been able to reduce the amount of stuff they have occupying their space by sending it to the cloud. But still, with all of these benefits, businesses are hesitant to adopt the cloud. In this blog we’ve outlined some common concerns with cloud integration and given solutions for them.

Moving to the Cloud Will Be Costly and Time Consuming

Pink Elephant 17 revealed in a study that shifting from legacy systems may seem daunting to many, but that it isn’t actually as hard as they initially thought. After dividing nearly 100 respondents into “first-movers,” those at least 25 percent through shifting to the cloud, and “late movers,” hose who hadn’t reached 25 percent yet, Pink Elephant found that the “first-movers” had changed their view of moving to the cloud being “risky” or “costly” to a more positive view in favor of integrating into the cloud.

According to the study, “While 39 percent of late-movers predict the shift will take 4 or more years, only 17 percent of first-movers think that.  Actually, most respondents said the shift will be completed sooner than that: 61 percent of first movers believe the shift will take less than 2 years!”

I Don’t Have a Qualified Team for the IT Challenges Moving to the Cloud Will Pose

57 percent of late movers see shortages of necessary IT skill sets as one of the issues when making the shift to the cloud. However, only 30 percent of early adopters believe that. While it may be true your IT team is small and limited in what they can spend their time on, there are options for temporary IT staffing or solutions when integrating into the cloud.

We Won’t Have the Inertia to Complete the Project

While it is true that switching to the cloud may seem like a big undertaking, as we’ve covered above it isn’t! That being said, creating a “cloud first” mentality within your IT department is crucial in getting the switch made efficiently. According to ServiceNow’s Udi Gotlieb, once deciding to switch to the cloud and getting together your team, it is important to keep IT’s mindset to one of change being inevitable and disruption of “the norm” can be an opportunity for IT to play a strategic role in making technology a core part of the business.

The Cloud isn’t as Secure or Effective as Our Current System

Every business’s top priority, of course, is security. You want all of your confidential files to remain that way! While cloud computing may seem as if it is adding an element of risk (considering you are involving a third party company in your affairs,) as long as your company goes through reputable sources such as ServiceNow, there is nothing to fear. In fact, without the risk of an on-site server crash, your data is arguably more safe.

When it comes to the quality of service, many companies worry that moving to the cloud will fail to run as smoothly as their current systems, or that the cloud service could become unavailable at some point. However, when switching to the cloud, if any downtime does occur, your company tends to get reimbursed for downtime in the unlikely event it happens. The cloud is just as effective as an on-site system in most cases.
